A hotel in Porlock Vale, Exmoor, has become the first business in its area to achieve a plastic free approved status.
Dunkery Beacon Country House Hotel, was given the award by Plastic Free Porlock Vale, a group which is focused on limiting the use of plastic waste in the local community.
Owners of the hotel, John and Jane Bradely said they made a number of efforts to reduce the level of plastic in their hotel, including “providing fresh milk in thermos flasks in guest rooms and chilled spring water in reusable glass bottles”.
In addition, the hotel has also never used guest bedroom consumables like coffee sachets and pre-wrapped biscuits, opting instead for “cannisters of loose products or compostable pods and homemade biscuits”.
The hotel, which houses eight rooms, also does not use sauce sachets or plastic straws/stirrers in the restaurant or bar either.
Ruth Walker, member of the Plastic Free Porlock Vale team, said: “We were so impressed with John and Jane’s extensive list of actions to reduce single use plastic, which thoroughly deserved recognition, and we are delighted that the hotel is our first Plastic Free Porlock Vale business champion.”
